Mary Poppins Cast Local

Friday 18th November 2016

Over one hundred hopefuls sang, tapped and acted their way through a grueling weekend of auditions in the hope they would secure a role in the 2017 international hit musical, ‘Mary Poppins’ - set to be staged at the Regent Theatre in May.

Producers of Grease: The Arena Spectacular Live and Mamma Mia! fame - Taieri Musical and DKCM, were quick to heap praise on the local talent saying the calibre of performers auditioning was staggering.

Executive Producer Tania Graham said, “I am delighted that we have secured such a high calibre cast for Mary Poppins! The audition process was both exciting and exhausting as we were spoilt for choice across the myriad of roles Mary Poppins offers”.

Well-known local actress Nadya Shaw-Bennett won the leading role made famous by Julie Andrews in the 1964 Disney and Sherman brothers classic based on the books by P.L Travers.

Having recently returned from two years in London she is delighted to be given the opportunity to bring the extraordinary and strange, neat and tidy, delightfully vain yet very particular, and sometimes a little frightening, but always exciting role of Mary to life.

“Like most families, I grew up with Mary Poppins and to now be given the opportunity to bring her to life in a production of this scale is just so exciting full of exploration and challenges – I cannot wait to get started”, Shaw-Bennett says.

Alongside her playing the confident everyman made famous by Dick Van Dyke is Evan Fenemor. A formidable talent he brings a wealth of theatre experience to the role having played a multitude of lead roles with his most recent being Roger in Grease: The Arena Spectacular Live.

He says of his appointment, “To be honest, I’m still coming to terms with the significance and enormity of being cast as Bert. He’s such an iconic role and to be asked to bring a such a beloved character to life is a tremendous gift for me to receive as an actor. This is going to be a wonderful journey and a wonderfully magical show!”

Four children have been cast to play the roles of Jane and Michael Banks. They are Lucas McLeod, Grace Johnston, Joseph Kelly and Samantha McCormick.

Opening at the Regent Theatre in May 2017 the spectacular musical, is set to enthrall, captivate and enchant audiences not only in Dunedin, but across New Zealand.

Set to be staged in nine cities including Dunedin, Hamilton, Wellington, Invercargill season completed), Blenheim, Tauranga, Rotorua, Napier and New Plymouth, this production has an all new creative team creating the lavish and vibrant costumes, magical set, classic choreography and extraordinary technical wizardry to enable Mary to fly.

12 chorus backing vocalists complete a cast of 47.

Mary Poppins opens at the Regent Theatre on 18 May 2017 for four shows only.
